A Conversation for The Solar System

Solar System

A good way of visualising the relative distances between the planets and other objects in the Solar System has recently been launched in the UK. The project is called Spaced Out.

A network of 18 artistic models representing the Sun, planets, Halley's Comet, asteroids, centaurs and trans-Neptunian Objects is being constructed at scaled locations throughout the length and breadth of Britain. The Sun is in Cheshire, at the Jodrell Bank Observatory, Saturn is in Lancaster, and Pluto, when constructed, will be in Aberdeen.

The scale of the 'model' is 1:15 million and it stretches from Cornwall to the Shetland Isles. On this scale, the nearest star would be about six times further away than the Moon!

The Spaced Out website is www.spacedout-uk.com.
