A Conversation for Malaria
Why so little money has been spent on it

I've been on this hobby horse since I first went to Africa in 1969.
Global warming and mass air travel mean that it is now possible to catch malaria again in rich western countries (it used to be fairly common in England in the 1600s) So it is now financially worthwhile for drug companies/medical researchers to look for mosquito killers/preventive drugs/treatment and vaccines. Too late for all those pathetic little bodies that contribute so heavily to the child mortality rate. Malaria is not a good death.
Thank you for a comprehensive reference article

The article arose from a combination of a desire to inform and my own anger. When it comes to prevention and cure, malaria is very much the Cinderella of tropical diseases. I personally think that the whole story is indicative of a profound lack of fellow feeling more than anything else.

I suspect you'll find that plenty of money *is* spent on it. The USA I believe spends oodles of dosh keeping it out of its own borders. But there the money, and the caring ceases
There are a number of drugs in the pipeline as far as a I'm aware. Qinghausu is the brightest hope and that is mentioned in the article. Shame on the Chinese governments for witholding this from science for so damn long!

Someone in America *does* care, and he's about the last one many would think would so so:

As for the likes of George Bush, well, I'm not even he could spell 'malaria'. And as for the Chinese, it says a lot for the idea that Communism is the creed of international brotherhood.

Aha! So he's *not* the incarnate?
Must be some dastardly plot he's hatching I reckon. It can't possibly be genuine, it's Bill Gates after all. Mua ha ha ha ha ha!

Bill & Melinda Gates have always been known to be generous in the Los Angeles not-for-profit community.

And it looks like he's quite a lefty by American standards: opposing tax cuts etc. He draws a clear distinction between his business and personal life, though.
Key: Complain about this post
