For long lists, I try to think of a story or sequence of events that links each of the items. One time this method "worked" so well that I was able to "remember" 51 items on a list of 50.

For a short sequence of numbers (like a combination for a lock) I usually put the numbers in an equation.
For example, if the combination I am trying to remember is 2-5-4 I will repeat to myself “2+5 does NOT equal 4”. (Somehow it works)

Finally, making up words help. In chemistry class, to remember that Neils Bohr was the one who theorised that protons and electrons travels in orbits around the nucleis of an atom, I simply had to recall “Bohrbits”.
