Nice article ... although... hmm... I can't help feeling that, although elusive, the answer to the question 'what is heat?' is known to science...
Surely heat just ends up as internal energy in its various forms? Translational being the most obvious... rotational and vibrational being important in non-trivial molecules... and potential energies between molecules accounting for the rest.
I don't know much about the topic... but, in at least some materials, it is quite simple to extrapolate from intermolecular potentials to latent heat of evaporation...
