The alternative means of getting into field archaeology is simple, do volenterr stuff at weekends, apply to compnies in Ireland for a job, get said job and ship ove. I went over for a 3month contract and 18months later i'm still digging

The problem is finding weekend volunteer excavations. Majority of the excavations I come across are only a few weeks (possibly a couple of months long max) and often cost a lot of money.

Have a look at http://www.ukarchaeology.org.uk/ for information on archaeological digs in the UK. Some of them are bound to want weekend diggers.

Thing is most of the excavations we list on the site (in fact just about all of them) are field schools etc. Weekend excavations are few and far between and tend not to be advertised because the local societies that do them feel they have enough help.

A great Source of information on dig sites is found at http://www.archaeology.org
It is a wonderful magazine for individuals interested in archaeology...
