A Conversation for Shroven on the Isle of Wight

Shroven on the Isle of Wight

As a boy I always ate pancakes on shove tuesday.
although I do not have any recolection of the wider
meanings of it, as my child hood was during W.W.2
and things were very tight as far as food was concerned
and that meant flour. I have already said this but as
far as dough nuts are concerned we need to advance to
the late 40's early 50's and to Westmores Doughnut
Shop, I ate my far share of them from this shop, and also they made lard cakes probable from the same recipe
I can still see the fat oozing from a slice when you took a bite. happy days! does any one know what happened to Westmores, I suppose it has been pulled down and they no longer make these juicy morsels because they absorbed
too much fat and would be bad for your health. I am nearly 70 and they have not killed me with too much fat.smiley - smiley

Paul Scott

Only a few years ago the Post Office in Newchurch had two photographs on the wall of their tea room showing Shroven in the village, one taken in Victorian times and one from the IW County Press of a recently revived "Shroving", both involving sweets being scattered in front of the Post Office for children to scramble for.

smiley - smileyHi it is Vectusian, I have just discovered that Newchurch
is again the centre of this item about Shroven. I have just purchased a copy of The Dictionary of Isle of Wight
Dialect not the one by W.H.Long but by an another vectusian who was raised in Newchurch and his name is
Jack Lavers. in it he states that Newchurch was the place that had it's own Christmas Carol intitled
"The Wold Hark". I have put feelers out for this carol
along with the music as well If anyone out there that
canlay there hands on both words and music please reply.
While on this subject it is a pity that the traditions
of the Wight have been lost. Although it is probally
due to people like me leaving and going overseas to live.
So I hope there are those out there that do care, and are recording the songs and the sayings for future generations. Also if anyone has the songs and music
please let this column know I would be most grateful
I will watch this column with interest in the coming
weeks smiley - cheersvectusian
