A Conversation for How Long is a Tick?

Your conversation was intrigueing, and brought back a fond memory of my father. When I was very young he was an army photographer, and was very handy in the old style dark rooms of the day. One evening he came home laughing heartily at another fellow in his unit. In the photo lab it was necessary to keep track of how much time passed while a piece of photo paper was in a pan of developer fluid. Being that total darkness was required and no timing device with flouresent features was available, my father's work mate muttered, "one chipmonk, two chipmonk, three chipmonk...." and so forth. Apparently the time it took him to say "one chipmonk, et cetera," was exactly one second. I was lead to believe that the workmate learned this technique in some ordinance disposal unit, to time fuses.
