Why did the Doctor do that at the end of the 2005 series? (SPOILERS)

I just watched the last episode. Can someone tell me why he took the energy of the tardis/time vortex into his body and thus died/was reborn?

It was the only way to prevent the energy killing Rose. He drew it out of her because although it would kill her, it would probably just trigger a regeneration for him.

(Or to put it another way, they needed a way to write out Christopher Eccleston smiley - winkeye )

But didn't he get the energy from Rose when he kissed her? Then they went inside the Tardis and he took the energy from the tardis as well, that's when he died/regenerated. Or is that how they regenerate - via the energy from the tardis? (it's been a while since I saw the old series).

Pity about Eccleston. He was very good, and downright superb in the final. Fingers crossed for the new guy.

He didn't take energy from the TARDIS, but put the energy from Rose back into the TARDIS. It was just that the energy had already 'killed' him, forcing his regeneration.
