The BATSMAN's Holding the BOWLER's Willey

An interesting one. Some accounts tend to go for "the batman's Holding the bowler's Willey" rather than the more obvious "the bowler's Holding the batsman's Willey". And I tend to believe it did happen because of that - when I heard the quote being the 'other' way round it seemed far more likely that it did happen for real - you'd think of Peter Willey as a batsman first and foremost but he did bowl off-breaks from time to time, and although of course Michael Holding was an out-and-out bowler he would have to have had spent some time at the crease.

It just gives the whole thing an air of authenticity somehow - I'll try and find out at work.

Well, according to Blowers, it definitely did happen and I'm wrong!

Do that, Emmily. Editorial Feedback is the place to request a change like this.

smiley - sorry everyone... It's one of those things where I'd been meaning to have a look and everything and suddenly there it is on the front page. I suppose as I've more or less become a dormant contributor to h2g2 I could find myself in this situation more often in the future.

By the way, my housemate has Brian Johnston's autobiography, and looked it up in that for me last night. The way he tells it is that he claims not to have known what he'd said until he received a letter from a lady who'd said that he'd made her laugh very much but he ought to be careful what he was saying in case children were listening...

I don't believe that for a minute, mind! smiley - biggrin
