The acting was terrible!
When I saw the film I wondered what all the fuss was about, although the actress that played O was kind of cute.
The book is much better!

Despite what the article says about the film being released uncut that isn't quite the whole story. The version you may have seen is the one released for the international English market. This dubbed version is far inferior to the original French version (recently shown subtitled on film4 and channel 4 in the uk). The dubbed version suffers from crucially cut scenes and poorly translated dubbing (often mangling the books original text). Sometimes missing scenes mean that the story jumps about and doesn't make complete sense. Even the haunting score is ruined because of time changes due to these cuts.
All the dubbed accents are slightly American (even the supposedly English sir Steven) and Sir Steven is annoying called Sir Stephan (as if he was French) even though the original French soundtrack clearly pronounces his name "Steven".
The French version is easily worth 8/10, even for die-hard fans of the book like me: The 'cut'; version is by comparison very poor. I'd advise anyone who thought the acting wooden to they and see the French original, which (in my opinion) is hauntingly erotic.

On a separate note, Dominique Aury's assertion that she left the ending of the book open because "she is not a novelist" has been take by some to mean that the book may not have been entirety a work of fiction.

The film version I have seen *is* the French one. When it was on TV here it was subtitled, not dubbed.

I am also a huge fan of the book. I have seen a graphic novel too, but I haven't managed to find one for sale yet.

I'm not too keen on the sequel though.

You can pick the graphic novel up quite easily - Amazon for instance (I assume you mean the Guido Crepax version, sold as "Justine" and "The Story of O"). I highly recommend it, since it's much better than any film could be.

The new film version of The story of O, which is due out soon, has had terrible reviews (it's set in modern day USA), not least because it apparently misses out most of the Roissy and Samois sections. Still, worth looking out for as well.

I'll keep my eye out for that. Even if it is just to complain that it's all wrong.

I have been searching for the uncut version of "Story of O" on DVD, in Region 1 (USA/Canada) format, for a long time.
Does anyone know if it actually exists? I have seen plenty of wonderful copies of it, but only formatted for the European market. I do wish there's one out there I can buy and watch without having to figure out a way to make my DVD player do European format DVDs.

I put 'Story of O region 1 dvd' into Google and got loads of results. The top one was from Amazon.com. If you buy now they promise delivery before christmas. Happy viewing.

Unfortunately, the DVD sold by Amazon.com is only 97 min long, not 103 like the European, and is thus the cut version. I guess I'll have to get that region-free DVD player after all! Or perhaps just read the book a few more times =) Imagination is so much better than most movies based on books, anyway!

I was told that American movies run at a different frame rate than European ones so they look shorter, so you'll probably find that it's exactly the same movie.

I found it out because I was looking for a dvd and kept coming up against the short versions, so I asked on h2g2 and they explained it to me.
