A Conversation for Great Castles
Rakvere, Estonia

My favourite castle is in Rakvere, Estonia. Actually it's not much castle anymore, just the ruins.
The castle is opened for visitors in summer (May-Sept) and then several concerts, exhibitions, fairs and performances take place there. The entrance fee is less than one pound.
History:
The ancient Tarvanpea fenced fortification on Rakvere Vallimägi was first mentioned in Henric's Livonian Chronicle in 1226.
Probably, in the second and third quarters of the 13th century the first stone building were built in the ancient stronghold encircled by a wooden palisade. The wooden palisade was replaced with a stone circular wall at the end of the 13th century and the first half of the 14th century. Thus the circular walled castle was formed. It was subseqently rebuilt into the "Konventhaus"-type castle. It's widened southern front courtyard, the complex of the eastern gate consisting of several parts, and the semicircular cannon tower constructed at the end of the 15th century and the half of the 16th century.
The owners of the Stone Castle:
-Until 1346 the Danish Kingdom
-the German (Livonian) Order
-Russian Tzars
-the Swedish Kingdom
-the Polish Kingdom.
The castle was damaged in the course of the battles at the end of the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century. The damaged castle passed into the possession of the Rakvere estate.
Nowadays it belongs to Rakvere Museum.
