All Chinese proper names and words should be normalised into pinyin romanisation:

Sinkiang = Xinjiang

Tien Shan = Tianshan

Ch'ing = Qing

And so on. English is not spelled using Spanish orthography. Swedish orthography is not used to spell Spanish. Pinyin romanisation was made official in China during the 1950s and 1960s, and the United Nations during the 1970s and 1980s, but the difficulty probably lies in the abundance of existing English language literatures and histories of China that utilised the British Wades-Giles system of transliterating the Chinese language - a system based on Latin and not very phonetically obvious to even those who speak a Latin language.

Orthographic consistency is necessary.
Orthographic compliance is essential.

Better inform all the writers at the Geographical magazine, cause they don't know that compliance is essential either!
