or really small instruments and a willingness to walk to gigs.

Its usually beneficial if more than one member of the band has transport, or you'll end up like me. I own an estate car so I have to pick up all the stuff, invariably end up at the practice room first so I end up carrying it all and taxi everyone around.

I remember reading an interview with Depeche Mode. They said since they all played synths, they just took the bus to a gig and plugged into the PA system. I've got a little Casio CZ-101 that sounds great and would fit in a backpack.
