The more you read about the American labour movement the more amazed you are as to the condition of America today - right-wing, reactionary, ill-educated, ignorant... what went wrong from such promising beginnings? The Americans should have been, on this showing, the first and greatest social democrat state in the world!

Sad innit?
I also knew none of this. I always assumed that May Day was in commemoration of some Soviet event as it was so strongly associated with communism when I was a kid in the early 70's (on US TV).
That's messed up!
