'Instead they turn to other marine mammals, reindeer, small rodents,' this does not make sence as a reindeer is not a marine mammel?

I think what it means is that it eats marine mammels, reindeer and small rodents all in seperate catagories, not: it eats marine mammels such as reindeer and small rodents. which as you have already pointed out, would just be plain silly.
