(An interesting article, by the way ... loved reading it!)
There's some musical evidence to support the suicide theory. At the time that Tchaikovsky received the letter (see entry), he was completing his 6th symphony - composing the slow movement. That movement radiates anguish! He died six days after the premiere performance.
