A Conversation for Ludwig van Beethoven - Pianist and Composer

Other Faces of LVB?

Post 1

Going from memory here, but I recall a lecture from a music theory course about Beethoven's 1st Symphony, the intro - basically the first page, I think. The prof described it as virtually atonal, i.e. not in any major or minor key. An exaggeration, probably, but the point is he was outside the envelope right off. After the first page, I think the work was more typical - you have to keep the audience in their seats smiley - online2long (I once saw people walk out after a few minutes of a performance of a Messiaen piece).

And he did compose a fairly humorous piece, I think titled "Rage for a Lost Penny".
