Sice evolution is going to happen
Tango Posted Aug 18, 2003
would you like to be more specific? Not all evolution is good. A lot of what is happening at the moment is making the site move in a direction away from it's fundemental aim(s), which is a bad thing.

Is this what you mean by fundemental aims, A550955 ?
I think this site has to be one to WANT and DISCOVER change, not resist it, IMHO.

yes, i think that entry is the one with the aims in. i haven't read it for a while though. basically the aim is to make the EG as good as we can, and a lot of people are using h2g2 without doing anything for the EG which is a bad thing.

Tango is speaking of the Edited Guide. It is the finished works that make it into the earth edition(online version). Don't worry too much Researcher 239363, just write a brief intro about yourself on your page and an Assistant Community Editor will be along to help you out.

Just click here: <./>useredit?masthead=1</.> to write the intro. Then go to <./>userdetails</.> and give yourself a more interesting nickname.
The edited guide is (supposed to be) the focus of the site. To see some examples of things in it click here: <./>Read</.>
Most of all, remember to have fun!

Tango, the Edited Guide was the reason that Douglas Adams set up this site. He envisaged a type of encyclopaedia, cheaper than Encyclopaedia Galactica and more friendly.
What he did not foresee is the h2g2 Community, which can spend weeks arguing about any given topic without ever reaching a conclusion and without ever contributing to the Edited Guide. The Community is essential to the operation of h2g2 for three reasons:
- they provide the friendliness which encourages people to come to h2g2 and look around.
- they provide the encouragement which makes writers stay here; without the community, most writers would quickly become bored and leave. Unlike Ford Prefect in the books, we are not paid for our contributions.
- the Community can provide a very quick answer to simple questions on a one-to-one basis, which the Edited Guide can't.
So don't discredit the people who hang around all day on h2g2 and 'don't contibute'.

It's a strange coincidence, don't you think, that you found this thread months after it happened, and hours after I expressed my dislike for a friend of yours in a different thread. If i didn't know better, i would think you were going through my conversations list, and if that's true, i must congratulate you on getting so far through, this thread must have been half a dozen pages down at least.

Strange coincidence, but coincidence nevertheless. I don't know which friend of mine you are talking about, and I certainly didn't root through your conversations. I got here from a link somebody had posted to Douglas Adams's vision for h2g2, which I hadn't seen before.

A little paranoia never hurt anyone.
I realised half way through typing it that it was inpractical for you to have found it in my convo list, but decided to post anyway...

In any case: There are some times threads developing from the momentary, spontaneous reactions in a lively conversation, which can be very funny: in my opinion ( because I love to laugh) those are the best productions from the h2g2 community.
Those "overworked" Edited writings really are not the best of presentation on the Internet.
The most wonderful opportunities for all humans in communication what a site like h2g2 can give, believe me: those back-and-forth discussions, arguments, spicy notes are the most valuable "pearls" on the screen!.....
"Don't work so hard: work smart!"
The best master pieces in art ( visual or verbal) always have a certain "flair" to it, it is easy flowing, it sparkles like a flame, and is so beautiful like a flight of a butterfly!
If you don't like what I say: you can also fly a Kite and learn about real fun. That is smart!
Forgive me if I don't like heavy, perspiration smelly, overworked Guide Entries. But everybody is entitled to his/hers own opinion.
Yet every good art-form has certain order in it,-- it is not obscure and it is not chaotic.
I wish that h2g2 would "evolve" further on into
an enjoyable system, where one does not have to have Panic Attacks and asking for help!
So much for today, I know we are a friendly community, so don't hate me so much if I don't agree with many of the established Guide Lines! Gecko

Gee, that feels good! A reply like yours Pedboy can make my Day! Thank you very much.
I am in an up-way mood anyway: you know today is Spring Equinox: Spring is here after ---for me-- a very long, depressing Winter!
All living things are anxious to come out from the winter hiding places, and us humans on this part of the Globe just as eager to "kranck" up the engine fueled with Spring's revitalizing "gasoline" for rolling up and down with increased speed on the way to the Galaxy!
Thank you again Pedboy for the inspiration you so kindly give away all the time for h2g2 community! Gecko

Since my orginal question was hijacked. I will again pose the question(slightly revised).
Since evolution is always happening, why do we not embrace it?

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Mar 27, 2004
What do you mean "embrace evolution"? I didn't answer the original question, because I didn't understand it.

Assuming you're still talking about the Guide here... I certainly wonder whether too much emphasis is placed upon: joining the h2g2 community and participating in that without necessarily contributing any information to the Guide.
for those that do wish to contribute something, the Edited Guide all too often being thought of as the main and only objective, sometimes inappropriately.
