Since writing this some months ago I have come across odd snippets of information (wireless interviews with Bizarre girls) that indicate that whatever the rumours it is unlikely that CC and Colley Shorter had an 'affaire' while his wife was alive. Any hint to the contrary in my footnote should be ignored. There has also been a serialisation of the CC story on Radio 4, to which, no doubt, you can find some links on the BBC website which made my little effort seem paltry indeed, but which seemed to share my view that Mr Shorter played a very important part indeed in nurturing, refining and encouraging the talents of CC.
