A Conversation for Bananas
ripening bananas with an apple

...if you put your banana in the fruitbowl (or in a sealed bag) with an apple, it will ripen more quickly. This is because the apple gives off bromines which cause fruit to ripen. This is also why apples are generally stored seperately from other fruits in transit, as otherwise all the fruit ripens more quickly and so has a shorter shelf life. Same applies for tomatoes!
