What a wonderfully detailed note. One point though is inaccurate there is no soprano sax in Ravel's orchestration. He uses an alto sax in The Old Castle but in the Goldenburg and Schmuyle movement the effect is a very high muted trumpet. These days it is normally played on a modern piccolo trumpet.

Hi picked up this old thread, but thought you may be able to help.
I'm looking for the different scales in which Pictures at an Exhibition has been scored for, i.e.
chamber orchestra, quartet, octet etc
Do you know about this? or have any pointers?
BTW what size orchestra does Ravels version require?
thanks
