Having used Holly for many years as a woodworker i managed to find out some facts and figures on the wood - its average weight dry is 56 lbs per cubic foot - oak is 45.
It rots and discoulours very quickly but otherwise is known as the whitest know wood, because of this it was used a great deal as a substitute for ebony ( accepts stains very well) and ivory.
Its very difficult to dry succesfully in a reasonable thickness, but vaccuum kilns work very well.(ive had it 5 inches thick.)
After being introduced to Mate tea i was informed it was from a tree of the holly family - the smell and taste are very similar - i wonder if anyone has ever tried holly for the same?
The key for Mate tea is the removal of the waxy layer on the leaves by flaming.
