Yes, I'm just concerned for her health. Her doctor says riding would be good for her back.
And I'm afraid she knows about that strategy and refuses, KB

The nicest horse I knew was an old nag of a thing. I think there was some Irish Draught in him, and god knows what else was in there, too. He was a real slow plodder, and if anybody touched him - patted him or stroked him, anything at all - he would just lie down and point blank refuse to move after that.
That was when he was towing something - but if he was just put in a field with no tackle or load on, he would charge around like a thing possessed. I liked his contrary streak.

Ah, they are the best Contrary, opinionated, ornery... *bliss*
Of course, they are even better when they are sweet as anything with you but like that with everyone else

Our Lucy - ( shiny chestnut, Spanish Arabian) would buck and play tricks with my mother (an excellent equestrian), behave very well for me, not take my little sister seriously... And if we put the baby on her back, she'd stand still with her legs locked, afraid she might hurt it!
The Sistabarista used to run back and forth under her belly with a brush and she'd not move, but if someone's toe touched her while mounting, she would of course be very ticklish and use it as an excuse to shy
I once found a lovely passage in an ancient Greek text that said you should never tie horses with their heads together, else they will grin and hatch evil plots

Aah, I love ancient writings about horses like that...
There's one about a good horse never touching the same bit of grass twice that I like, think it's chinese.
Arabs tend to be very quirky, they do seem to like forming fairly close bonds with people rather than just being happy to work with or for anyone and make the best of it.

Yes, "quirky" certainly is the right word!
(just to show her off http://public.fotki.com/Malabarista/frogs_are_for_frien/tia_lucia.html The saddle always slid forward like that. She had no withers to speak of!)
There's a bit of the Qu'ran that's become a German proverb, about the most complete happiness on Earth being found on the back of a horse - but the original version does also go on to add "and in the health of the body and the bosom of a woman"

Ah, one of those proverby quoty things that turns out to have been written from quite a specific point of view
*will look when home!*

Yes. I know all about proverbs by now, having had to translate several hundred of the stupid things recently Knowing their origins helps you find similar ones in another language...

Were they all as crazy as Aristotle?

Never trust a horse that grins, anyway!
The ancient Greeks believed horses were inherently evil. Some cities even required that they be muzzled in public!

And horses aren't even carnivores!

I know... I reckon whoever started that rumour was one of those strange people who's conviced that because they are big, they are inherently deliberately dangerous.
It does, of course, depend on how they were raised and trained and what people expected of them... I know a few people who are pretty convinced that horses are mean because they've only ever really seen them being hauled around by ametours and beaten into horseboxes and stuff...

Well, ok, there are the Thracian horses - according to legend, Diomede fed his horses on human meat... But then you wouldn't want them anyway. Thracian horses were described as "base, ugly, low-shouldered, ewe-necked, flat-footed, bad walkers, worse gallopers..."

Aww... sucha difference from Bucephalus, Sleipneir (sp) and Pegasus!
As legends go, I prefer the pretty ones, though the idea of a legendary race of aggressive, murderous horses is pretty

There's always the legend of how the Arabian horse was created...
Mohammed (the one that took dictation from angels and called it the Qu'ran) took a lot of horses and trained them to come to his trumpet signal, then locked them up with no water in the desert for three days. He finally opened the gates so they could run to the river, and when they were almost there, blew his horn. The seven mares that returned rather than go drink were the founding stock of the Arabian horse...

Ooh! I didn't know that one! Interesting! And very telling about their expectations of the arabian horse (they require the horse to have the honour and loyalty they expect of themselves, if not more...)
