I've driven a fair bit in Norn Ireland and this well-written piece brought every tortuous mile flooding back.

Two points I'd make -

1) Driving anywhere in Ireland takes you twice as long as it does on the mainland.
2) Don't drive a car with UK plates or you'll sit on side roads for aeons waiting for someone to let you out.

And my second second point would be, don't try driving in July because this seems to be the walking season.

I think it's because the two motorways are joined for so long, you get a feeling of "oh I can cross over anytime - no hurry ... oh what's on Radio Ulster today I wonder ... OH SH.. WRONG MOTORWAY!"

Great piece Beatrice smiley - ok

Right now? Stephen Nolan and THE BIGGEST SHOW IN THE COUNTRY!!!

(A local and louder variant of Jeremy Kyle)

But no doubt Alan Simpson will play you an Undertones track later on, after Uncle Hugo's had his country music show. smiley - winkeye

Sniff.. I miss Radio Ulster (no really!) I know there are streaming options, but it's just not the same!

Motorway-wise, I never could work out why there were tiny bits of differently named motorways - M22 and M3 for example. I didn't understand why they weren't just called the same as the motorways they continued from ... That they were intended to form the start of a larger network makes sense now - thanks for that info!

A bit like Glasgow's famous 'bridges to nowhere' I suppose http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1096392 and http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/cb/Wfm_m8_bridge_to_nowhere.jpg/250px-Wfm_m8_bridge_to_nowhere.jpg (which eventually got an office block built onto it)
