When did Chopin and Schumann use the theme? I am aware that Carnaval is based on various permatations of AS[Es=Eb]CH SCHA and As[=Ab]CH as various puns on Asch, the village in Bohemia where Clara Schumann née Wieck (Schumann's wife) grew up, and SCHumAnn. Also that The op.1 variations are based on AB[b]EGG. I am not aware of uses of the BACH theme by these two composers, however.
