There was indeed Mina - it even had the same cheesy theme tune.

Radio Four did a spoof sequel a year or two back - "Richard Barton, General Practitioner", which told the story of Dick Barton's son who went into medical practice, with his father living in the flat above his country house. Dick was suffering from Altzheimer's, and you kept getting his mental processes in true "Dick Barton" style as he would, for example, mistake the vicar for a Nazi spy who tried to kill him in Prague in 1921...
His trusty friends Jock and Snowy still visited him, and the theme tune was still the Devil's Gallop... It was fairly tastefully done, and I think it deserved a second series...

I had the tapes of the first series for a while from my dad. Being born well Post-Dick-Barton-Era, I thought it superb. It is so reactionary, it is fun again. Just the way Germans get done in, how women are treated (disgustingly) shows how little we men have moved up till now. But I loved the style all the same.
Any other good radioprograms you know I should listen to? I have had a go at the Goons, Much binding in the march (and of course the Hitchhiker) What was the Lord of the rings-play like?

The BBC adaptation of "Lord of the Rings" was superb! I believe it's still available as a CD set from BBC enterprises...
If you'd like to try something a little more recent, keep an eye out for the next series of "Dead Ringers" - a "celebrity impersonation" show with edge... It won nothing but praise for its first series.
Also, "Old Harry's Game" was superb, and I believe the tapes of the first series are still available. It's a sitcom set in Hell, so avoid it if you happen to be a Christian fundamentalist...

I'd have a go at Journey Into Space as well. This was a mammoth series made in the 1950s but it was repeated a few years back and there are tapes available. The writer, Charles Chiltern, was also a producer on The Goon Show.
As far as comedy is concerned, Round The Horne is exceptional, and Hancock's Half Hour is fantastic if you like more realistic comedy (it was written by the men who later wrote Steptoe and Son). More recent successes are Radio Active in the 80s and Knowing Me, Knowing You in the 90s - but you've probably seen that on TV!
Mind you, there is nothing to touch Lord Of The Rings in the drama department. The film series will be doing well if it is even half as good.

Is there anything worthwhile on air at the moment? I only just found the ways and means to listen to Radio on the internet.
If there is anyone who can tell me, when to hear Dr. Laura Sleschinger on an american radiostation, it would be nice to let me know. I mostly do not share her view, but I have never heard anyone come down to the point so directly in such a short time.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
