I understand that in late 1800's early 1900's the 'code word' for gay men was Earnest--He's an earnest young man. Hence the title of Oscar Wilde's excellent play: The Importance of Being Earnest.
Furthermore, the nickname for one's paramour was Cecile, also refered to in Wilde's Play.
