In certain Chinese cultures (well, mine) it is considered bad luck to celebrate the birthday early on in life, as this is seen as tempting fate (I shall probably die early now, since I could never resist myself). However, in the later years birthday celebrations are quite elaborate, with special noodle dishes involved; the length of the noodles is supposed to symbolise and (hopefully) promote longevity.
So start eating noodles, people!
