A Conversation for Not The Nine O'Clock News

The Spawn of NTNON

Post 1

"Not the Nine O'Clock News" has spawned a few knock-off's on CBC Radio and Television in Canada. For instance, "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" is a half-hour mock television news show making fun of Canadian politics in a similar manner.

As well, CBC Radio 1 has "Definitely Not the Opera" at the same time as CBC Radio 2's "The Opera", though DNTO is not exactly comedy.

Dr E Vibenstein (You know it is, it really is.)

That's interesting... was the original NTNOCN ever shown in Canada? I wouldn't have thought the references to obscure British politicians would travel well, but then it seems to go down okay with British people who weren't even born when it was first shown, so I don't know...

Yes, it did show up in Canada: that's where I saw it. We kinda got used to references to obscure politicians with Python "...until the name Maudlin is almost totally obscured"...."Reginald Maudlin's...elbow".

Never knew who they were, other than public figures, but seeing them lampooned in that fashion made them obviously idiotic and has jaded my attitude toward politicians since...strangely, few other comedy groups use politicians in the same fashion...
