Texas Dancehalls Great Fun

Post 1

Steve K.

Sounds like a fun place, I don't get to Austin much but I'll remember it.

I was in Gruene Hall (also in the Texas Hill country) once many years ago, I think it was Alvin Crow playing. That's always seemed to me one of the prime examples of a classic Texas dancehall. At least ever since Gilley's closed here in Houston - now THAT was an experience. (For foreigners, its where much of the movie "Urban Cowboy" was made). A lot of fun, I took my aging in-laws there one night, they had a great time. Fights? Only among big cowboys, and the Pasadena police won all of those.

Gilley's is long gone, but we have a new one, the Armadillo Palace. A much smaller place near central Houston, but right across the street from one of the best barbecue joints in town (and owned by the same family). So far some pretty good acts, even The Amazing Rhythm Aces ...smiley - cool

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Long time no see Steve smiley - biggrin

Yeah, I've been to Grune Hall to - had a meal at the Grist Mill beforehand. It's bigger than the Broken Spoke and has a slightly different layout in the dancehall area, but is pretty much the same sort of thing - restaurant at the front, bar in the middle and dancefloor at the back.

I'd like to write and entry about the history of Texas dancehalls in the future smiley - smiley

Gilley's will have to be part of your history, here's a site with some history:

Click on "The Sign?" to see it in its current location at The Cowboy Ranch restaurant, a few miles from my house. Mickey Gilley has also opened a new restaurant (Gilley's - what else? - kind of upscale from the original) not too far away, and I think it also has some memorabilia from the dancehall, maybe even the mechanical bull ... smiley - bruised
