Many names were changed due to xenophobia in the United States. For instance, many early film makers were Jewish and most of them changed their screen names. During the era of the Red Scare, all actors with Polish names (and most other foreign-sounding names) were asked to change their last names. Most complied, but a few didn't. A few actors still change their names to remove ethnic indicators, but most don't.

Edward G. Robinson is a prime example. His real name was Emanuel Goldberg and he was a Romanian Jew. He changed his name because the film-makers said it was too Jewish. The 'G' stood for Goldberg as he insisted on having something in his screen name that remained true to his Jewish roots.
