A Conversation for Film Star Pseudonyms

If you're going to include 'Gene Hackman' as a pseudonym, you ought to include 'Gene Kelly' (actually Eugene). In both cases the actors used their real name. Gene is a standard and acceptable abbreviation of Eugene in the States. For example, Gene Kranz, the flight director in charge during the Apollo 13 crisis, was actually Eugene Kranz. So, IMHO, you should strike Gene Hackman from the list.

Another non-pseudonym is Susan Sarandon. She was married to actor Michael Sarandon when she began her acting career and, unusually, stuck with her married name rather than her maiden name.

Sorry. That should have been Chris Sarandon.

And I would argue that Deborah Jane Kerr-Trimmer just followed an equally acceptable practice and only used one half of her double-barrelled name. There are some people I have known for years before discovering that they're actually double-barrelled.

Jack Lemmon just used an acceptable nickname for John. Dana Andrews just used his middle name, which many people do, anyway - so the real question there is whether he was always known by his middle name or just did it for the acting. Bette Davis did a combination of the two: middle name Elizabeth and Bette being a standard abbreviation of Elizabeth.

An interesting question, which I assume you have researched, is whether Nastassja Kinski changed her own name, or whether her father changed his legally. Same question for Michael Douglas and Martin Sheen.

Just because they're not strictly pseudonyms doesn't mean it isn't interesting to read about. Although I agree with you about the Gene thing. By the way, from now on I shall be known as the artist formerly known.

Forget that last bit up there. I really have to start wearing my glasses when I'm doing this. I wonder where I put them...
