With the internet there are tonnes of online easy-to-understand maps particularly maps for tourist destinations, so we have no excuses not to get our hands on some. Maps provide 2 pivotal roles for the travellers:
1-Safety
2-It adds time to your holiday if you have read a map in advance. How so? Let's say you are going to Orlando for a week and it is your first time to visit. Day 1 you are tired, jetlagged and in unfamiliar terrain, so you leave exploring to your 2nd day, then finally on your 3rd day you have a rough outline of where to go. This leaves you with your 4th, 5th, and 6th day to enjoy the sights, and attractions as on your 7th day you are coming home. So suddenly your 7 day vacation boils down to 3 days. 
How can maps help? Simple, go to a map website that has simple streetmaps showing where the sights and attractions are to be found in your city (maybe try http://www.gostreetmaps.com/) then plan your agenda for your first day or so, in advance of your trip. That way, you will have an idea of your bearings before you arrive, helping you ensure that a 7 day vacation remains exactly that 7 days.
