I've used a similar method for photographing the eclipse. With an SLR lens, the light travels through the lens, bounces off two mirrors and comes out the eyepiece. Well, for obvious reasons once again, you don't want to look through the camera directly at the sun.
During an eclipse the light is very focused. If you hold your camera out in front of you and roughly aim it in the direction of the sun, you'll know when you have it aimed properly because you'll see a small version of the eclipse on the ground below the camera and you can press the shutter.
