A Conversation for What's the Point of Astronomy?

I teach middle school and have found that teaching astronomy encompasses all of the other science disciplines I'm required to teach. I don't know who to ask or give credit to, but I'd like to use your synopsis as an intro to what I teach. I appreciate your humor and insight, and the ability to include so much in a short space. While I am a beginner I am amazed both at what I learn each year, and equally amazed at what I don't know. My son and I are planning to go to Kennedy Space Center this summer for a Shuttle Launch. This came about from working with an Americorp Volunteer who's father just happened to be the laison between the USA & other countries in the International Space Station endeavor. I'm continually surprised at the diverse population around us that are amateur astronomers, and I encourage all my kids to aspire to be involved in Space Technology, etc., etc.,.....anyway, thanks - whoever wrote this! cosmo

I agree. I am very interested in this subject. Astronomy is a fascinating subject, and, as others have mentioned, the only science where both amateurs and professionals collaborate. Thanks for this article. It's brilliant.
