A Conversation for Privacy on the Internet

security & privacy on the web

There are a few more things you can do. For example, there are personal firewall programs available, and some of them are free.

I won't name any names, because the modz would probably remove 'em anyway! Just do a search for firewalls, and you will no doubt come up with more than a few. Just don't be alarmed when you find yourself in the zone smiley - winkeye

There are also free sites that will check the security, or not, of your connection/browser. I recently visited such a site, and am pleased to report my connection was virtually invisible. Again, I won't name names, but here's a hint that Star Trek fans should recognize: "Shields Up, Red Alert!" smiley - rocket

I have been concerned about Internet privacy and security ever since I started using the Internet. My e-mail client software is configured with maximum security, so I don't worry about script 'viruses', and I don't download software anymore. Or if I do, I run it through a serious anti-virus program.

I remove any cookies, even the h2g2 ones, immediately after closing the web browser. I use a firewall to selectively receive or refuse cookies, javascript etc. I don't keep a 'history' folder.

I don't get a lot of spam, but whenever I do, I 'bounce' it, using a fake 'e-mail address no longer valid' application.

I never use my 'real' e-mail address, on my webpages or in my e-mail.
I never use my real name, or give out any real personal information.

Remember, a little paranoia is a good thing smiley - smiley
