This is really good, helpful, and informative. I remember, way back when I was at school, one of our woodwork projects was to build a bird box, but it included the perch as described *not to have* 
.
I'm fortunate that there are enough mature trees in the garden not to have to put up a box, especially given the local squirrel and woodpecker population!
