In electronic engineering you end up using imaginary numbers as has been said in the article but if you just pick up a text book you may get confused as engineers use j instead of i as the imaginary symbol (i usually gets used for electric current).
The applications are mostly to do with calculations about frequency - complex impedance or complex frequency.
If there is more interest I could write a short article about these topics (when I remember my education in them 
)

That article does indeed need to be written.
And you are completely right about electrical engineers using j rather than i. It drives my math major roommate crazy.
