A Conversation for Porridge

Spurtle

I once won a trivia quiz through knowing that a "Spurtle" is what a real Scot stirs his porridge with. As far as I can tell it appears to be a culinary term for a stick.

Ah, that's where you're wrong. The ancient art of spurtle-making is an artform in itself. My dad used to turn the things on his laith and give them to members of the family as presents. After a while they stopped eating porridge to try to give him a hint. Of course, go into any tourist tat shop in Scotland and they charge a ridiculous amount of money for something you can create in a few minutes out of...um..well..essentially a stick. smiley - smiley
