I'm a firm believer in kismet - not much happens in life without a reason.

'The history of education in Scotland is longer and more illustruous than you
suppose. Aberdeen University is the second oldest University in the UK.'
I hate to be pedantic raven but I was under the impression that the foundation date of Aberdeen University was 1495, placing it after Glasgow and St Andrews (and that's just the Scottish Universitys).
Technically speaking, there were two universitys in Aberdeen - Kings and Marischal - at a time when there were only two universitys in the whole of England (that's not relevant or even particularly accurate but I seem to remember that Aberdeen University uses that fact in its own publicity material)

I knew St Andrews was the eldest. I remember being told, when I went there, that Aberdeen was second. Apparently, you have access to some hard facts on this, which have been sadly missing from this discussion. No-one is vulnerable to a charge of pedantism if they have the facts.
Still, 1495 is a good long time ago, and will hopefully surprise anyone who imagines that civilization arrived in Aberdeen a short time ago.

However just because there was a University, some churches, etc. does not mean that the fishing population did not have their own superstitions, and does not mean that their society was anywhere near identical to ours, in material, in ideas or in ethics, and does not mean that they didn't used to beat people to death to try and change a spell of bad fishing.

I think we have just about exhausted our differences on this one. You are apparently ready to believe the worst of people seperated from you by time or space. This is contrary to my experience. I propose leaving it at that.
