A Conversation for The America's Cup

Should they stay or should they go?

Post 1

New Zealand has been in something of a tizzy of late about the America's Cup. The problem is that several of the winning Team NZ crew have been headhunted by other syndicates to sail for them next time.

If horse-racing is the sport of kings, then yachting is the sport of multi-millionaires, a commodity NZ doesn't have in great abundance.

Within days, those crew who have "defected" including the #1 skipper have gone from national heroes to "traitors" who should be "banished, never to return."

I say b******s!

The way NZers are carrying on, you'd think Team NZ was being supported directly from NZ tax coffers! And even if they were, so what? They won the Cup for NZ again, are they expected to do for us again and again in perpetuity?

In truth what happened was that in all the self-congratulating, the highups in Team NZ forgot to make sure their star players were all signed up and taken care of. What other conclusion can you draw from a sporting syndicate that waits until one week *after* two of its key members have been poached to start mailing out contracts.

Team NZ and the nation of NZ itself seriously needs to get to grips with the concept of "professional sport".
