Surprised this book and its thesis has been omitted.

I read that book but its been long ago. I've also read some of the others mentioned and attended lectures on the topics of brain, mind, consciousness, etc. One comment I recall is that philosophy consists of the trivial and the incomprehensible (or words to that effect). Another is that if the mind were simple enough for us to understand it, we'd be too simpleminded to understand it.

I haven't read the back but I'll try to track it down. There are plenty of other quite influential theories which I haven't touched on (Francis Crick's 40Hz theory, a more detailed description of Roger Penrose's quantum mechanics-based theory etc) - that's why I called it SOME modern theories of consciousness. There's definitely room for another installment when I get around to writing one.
