Not so sure about the flares. Owt bigger than miniflares is too big, and miniflares are very unreliable, and more importantly no good when the weather is bad & the cloud is down [which is when you're likely to need them]. I own some, but think hard before taking them.

I'd also consider a stainless steel [=unbreakable] thermos rather than a stove. They keep drinks warm for over 24 hours, and if you've still not been rescued by then you'll be miserable, so as well to be miserable properly

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I was just wandering around my old Entries and came upon you I have nae idea about flares, but I decided that if an inexperienced Hitchhikers looked at this and decided to do it then better safe than sorry, let 'em take them The thermos is a good idea, but in the winter it can be several days before rescue in the Grampians, or further north, so I would still probably take a stove - and there is nothing like some freshly brewed tea Until later....
