My parents have managed to get to Paris for a weekend just paying the tax needed. How so I hear you ask. My dad used to work for a UK rail operator and part of the benefits package is that employees, spouses and dependents get low-cost travel and a certain number of free day passes. This enabled them to use the pass to get to Paris after travelling to London from Manchester (still no through service yet, nor does there seem much chance of it happening either 
).
