A Conversation for Firefly - The TV series

Al Johnston

I saw the movie last night: it was excellent, fitting in well with the series without being incomprehensible to anyone who's new to all this.

A few questions from the series are cleared up in whole or part (the origin of the Reivers, the nature of the Alliance, some of what happened to River) while others will remain as mysteries (Shepherd Book's past).

The Alliance of the movie owes a debt to Iain M Banks' Culture, although it's not quite that enlightened. A new, wonderfully sinister Operative replaces the men with the blue hands as chief bad guy. Other changes can be put down to an increased budget (the Mule no longer needs wheels, Alliance troops don't carry SA-80s any more) but this does lead to some exciting chase/fight scenes...

In short: go see when it's out at the end of this month!

i picked up the DVD of the tv show at the weekend and could not stop watching it. even my girfriend and self confessed hater of sci-fi liked it and we now only have two left to watch befor we see the film next week. it got a good review from empire and most other sites have rated it highly so it should be a treat.smiley - oksmiley - ok

I thought the film was brilliant. As I know the characters so well, it's difficult to tell what someone who didn't know them would think. Summer Glau was amazing. In the cinema I was in, the audience were really getting into it. Shame the film doesn't seem to be a puller at the moment - the cinema staff said that people are put off seeing science fiction, but they flock to some of the more rubbishy stuff.

I wonder why the Reavers are called Reavers? I wonder what sort of community they have? We don't really get that close to them (and I for one was quite relieved about that!).

the movie was awesome..they did a good job of introducing the carachters enough for anyone who had not seen the sieries and also gave us a bit more insight into the back story of the Dr and River. hopefully it will do enough to get the other two films made or possibly re comission the series. i just wish we could have found out a bit more about the Shepard. he was an ineresting carechter.

I'm not sure. "Reiver" was a word used on the borders between England and Scotland for a raider or bandit, so it may derive from that: the Border Reivers has a pretty unwholesome reputation, although they never went as far as:

"... they will rape us to death, eat our flesh and sew our skins into their clothing; and if we're really, really lucky, they'll do it in that order."

Saw it on Wednesday. Brilliant, simply brilliant.

The explaination of the Reavers made more sense than what we were told in the series. I suspect Joss was setting us up.

Yes, I thought the explanation of the Reavers was satisfying. No womenfolk, though. Perhaps they'll just die out?

By the way, did anyone catch Book's full name on his memorial stone? Wash's stone named him Hobun Washburn, I think. Which means the information I was working from for the names was wrong.

class. saw it at the cinema the other day (on my birthday actually smiley - smiley) and was a great present.

Like what was done completely, but leaves some questions unanswered...

Who helped River and Simon escape in the first instance. We know Mal picked them up later, but there's something there...

And I think we all know Sheperd Book was an assassin, but there's room for something more there.

Anyone read the comics released alongside the movie? If not, DO! They're great!

ahh. Well all the links to the Alliance and if you think about his continued references to 'belief' both by the Operative (Assassin) and Rook.

Operative (Assassin) - "Would you die for your beliefs Captain Reynolds?"

Rook - "Why do you think I always refer to God when I speak of belief Captain?"

The Operative (Assassin) believes he is the only one who is right, that his fight is for a better world and better life. That is his belief. smiley - winkeye

Just a theory, I might be completely off ball, but it works for me smiley - biggrin

smiley - eurekaCould be - I wonder why Book helped the Serenity crew, then - maybe there was some original belief which he believes has been perverted?

He may have just been intrigued by Mal's "way" smiley - laugh

"I have a 'way'?" smiley - winkeye

All in all, finger points to Book being a past Alliance Operative (especially the episode of Firefly where the Serenity returns to Alliance HQ and he is given medical aid no questions asked "Get this man to the Infirmary, NOW!") in my uh...book smiley - tongueout

But still, brilliant film, yah boo sucks to the tv execs who cancelled Firefly I say!
