You forgot to mention one little fact... that in every single game, when you "win" it's the end of the world. Hence the name "Final Fantasy" and the fact that there is no continuity between games except for rumors involving minor character's names and little known facts and the like.

FF7's world survived for at least 500 years after that.

How do you know that? I can't really make heads or tails of the ending of FF7.

Well look at it this way:
The world is still there. Note the distinct lack of any 'space' where hte Earth is. Notice the distinct placement of all the dirt and ground.
There are living beings. Note the plants: trees, vines, grass. RedXIII (or Nananki the 2nd i guess by that time) also makes an appearance.
So yes, the world is still there. Whether there are people on it is open to interpretation, but anyway.

What I meant was, how do you figure 500 years? I mean, yes, the remains of Midgar is all vine covered, but assuming the place has been left alone ever since the end of the game, that could happen in as little as 20 years.

Actually, the origin of the name Final Fantasy is this: Once upon a time, Square Ltd. was a failing dream propagated by an ambitious and tenacious programmer named Hironobu Sakuguchi. After their first game failed in obscurity, it nearly ruined the company. Hironobu-San decided that if his company was going to go, is wasn't going to be forgotten. Pulling together everything he ever wanted a video game to be, he pitched his idea to his publisher. After begging and pleading, he got the final go-ahead, even though his idea would surely bankrupt Square Ltd. Hironobu-San persevered and soon his dream was realized; he knew it may be the last game he ever made, but it was one he would always be proud of, so he dubbed it his "Final Fantasy." Final Fantasy was a hit not only in Japan, but America as well, and soon revenues from subsequent sequels allowed Square Ltd. to break away from their publisher and become Square Co., now known as Squaresoft.
It is interesting to note how Hironobu-San's personal battle to fulfill his dream is played out again and again in the various incarnations of Final Fantasy.

IIRC it says "500 years later" at the beginning of the ending

Another viewpoint on the name: Some people say it is called Final Fantasy because Squaresoft honestly thinks each one will be the last! however, your story is probably a bit more accurate than this.

I don't know who told you that, but I recommend that you confiscate their crack pipe. If that was the case, how could Square announce not only the plans for, but the conceptual designs to the next three installations of FF?

I heard it about a month before that announcement came out. As for the people with crack pipes, it was the esteemed editors of Gamepro itself.

On the H2G2? Well, if you're viewing this in Classic Goo, click on the Preferences button in the goo to your left. If you're viewing this in the* bland and rather ghastly Alabaster skin, click on the Preferences button at the top or bottom of the page.
[*Footnote: In my opinion.]
