Despite the Assembly being established only last year Cardiff has been capital of Wales since Queen Elizabeth II made it so in 1955.
It is still, however, the most recent city to become a capital in Western Europe (if not all Europe).

The Castle built in 1090 is built on the remains of a Roman Fort.

Just to confuse things about the castle - the bit that everyone calls the castle is quite recent - dating from only the last century I believe, and is extremely ornately decorated throughout. (Marquis of Bute, Burgess, etc - tons of stuff on the web about all this). The whole castle area is well worth a visit, whether to just have coffee on the lawn, or visit the whole shooting match - modern, Norman, Roman bits plus a military museum.
