I vaguely remember that the name is also given to river boats in the Far East - like big dugouts with a 20cc two-stroke engine on a stick.

I've had one too many close encounters with tuk tuks and can assure you the vehicle in which my farang (foreign) friend and I stuffed ourselves (one of the small single Thai person tuk tuks) was not a cracker, cheese or otherwise. . .
