Some years ago Marks and Spencer started making new-fangled things with no draught hole or cord but with ribbed cuffs round both legs and arms - very similar to those which cricket teams now wear for non-test matches. Personally I date the downfall of English cricket from this public wearing of bedwear. Perhaps if they'd gone the whole hog and had MCC stripes in silk they might have fared better.
