A Conversation for Kulusuk International Airport, Greenland

Well, only passed over Kulusuk a couple of times, not dashing in, but talking with a lot of persons passing there or stationed there as chopper pilots for GLACE (Greenland Air), I'll think I'll still prefer Bluie West 8 (Sondre Stromfjord), at least at it where before the USAF base closed. I think they had a bigger bar and a real KGH Shop (KGH = Royal Greenlandic Trade Organisation or KNI.gl today).

Bluie West 1 (Narsarssuaq, southern Greenland) where more provincial, but with a better hotel.

I actually spent a week of vacation at Bluie West 8, a.k.a. Sondre Stromfjord, a.k.a. Kangerlussuaq. It's a *lot* like the description of Kulusuk, except:

* Kangerlussuaq is in West Greenland, Kulusuk is in East Greenland (Guide entry to the contrary).

* One can hike to the great Greenland icecap from Kangerlussuaq.

Kangerlussuaq still has a couple of bars (counting the airport lounge), 300 inhabitants, and 400 hotel rooms. I'll have to write an entry on it someday.

Here comes a graybeard.

I spent several weeks at Kulusuk and several months at Sondrestrom (Kangerlussuaq) in 1958. I'd like to hear from others in that space at that time.

Kangerluassuaq is a worthy distination, with incredible natural beauty and wildlife. Incredible mosquitos, too.

But Kulusuk, in November and December, is one a one-of-a-kind destination. There is an endless parade of enormous icebergs floating by. Each one is unique and beautiful. It's worth the trip.

Greenland is a world class vacation spot. One would surely need to travel to another planet to equal the iceberg show at Kulusuk.

Well, don't forget the sight from the Ilulissat airport, Jakobhavns Isfjord, the mightiest ice fjord on earth. OK, Antarctica have them bigger, but not as if you where one Piccadilly Circus in the rush hour. Ilulissat is like that.

Once the chopper pilot on my flight left the airport towards Kangerlussuaq and stayed at ca 100 m. Some of the icebergs where mountains (berg in Scandinavian), considering 6/7 still where below the water. A mighty scene, more easy accessible today. Why go to Thailand, go to Ilulissat smiley - winkeye.
